about me

Engine rebuild on my Omni GLH circa 2002

nice to meet you

I’m Jake Bauer, a self proclaimed tech geek that has always been fascinated with gadgets and learning how things work.  I enjoy tinkering with electronics, home automation hardware and software, working on cars, and enjoy most things electrical or mechanical.  I built my first computer and website in high school in 1999 and rebuilt my first engine in 2002 and have been hooked ever since.

I served 15 years in the U.S. Army, deploying to Iraq twice.  I was always seen as the tech Geek of the group and it brought me some cool opportunities.  On one of my tours I got to manage all the IT equipment for our Unit where I learned a ton about networking, managing user accounts, imaging computers, setting up VOIP phones, and all kinds of fun stuff.

These days, I am braving the cold in Wisconsin as an Electrical Maintenance Technician at a cast iron foundry.  I am fortunate to be getting paid to setup, install, and troubleshoot really cool (and expensive) industrial equipment such as PLCs, motors, pumps, various sensors, and other automation equipment.  I enjoy it and I seem to learn something new every day.

Outside of work, in addition to my home automation hobby and making YouTube videos, I enjoy spending time outdoors fishing, canoeing, or grilling out.  I also enjoy practicing guitar and “attempting” music and watching the occasional movie.  The Big Lebowski, Dumb and Dumber, and Office Space are a few of my favorites.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy the site.  If you have any questions or want to just drop a line to say hi, my inbox is always open.  Have fun and enjoy!
